BIO

John Paul is a singer-songwriter, breathwork therapist and outdoor nature sprite who hails from Edinburgh but has been firmly rooted in the village of Comrie in Perthshire for many years.

Having played round Highland Pubs for many years, he started writing his own songs when he was working as a tour guide in Scotland, finding an outlet for his lifelong cultural outrage at the Clearances and the continuing inequities of land ownership in Scotland.

In 2021 he took part in online songwriting course ‘Bird on A Wire’ run by Findlay Napier and Boo Hewardine, which turned out to be something of a life changing experience! Finding his own voice, songs sprang forth about water, forest, birds and spirit, threaded by a narrative of the urgent need to re-engage with our place in nature. Over two years these songs were honed into his first album, Overstory, released November 2025.  His music has been featured on BBC Radio Scotland, Heartland FM and Blackdog Radio.

John Paul continues to write alongside his fellow songwriting crew ‘Drunks in A Midnight Choir’ who have kept going now for 3 years after that initial songwriting course. He is, it must be said, also prone to writing some very daft little ditties. The first of these, ‘Barefoot Shoes’ was very nearly sold to a US barefoot shoe company. Alas, it didn’t sell enough shoes!
